Birmingham with students!

On Wednesday we took a small group of students to Birmingham, looking at old and new.
This was the interior decoration inside a shoe shop in one of the new units in The Custard Factory.
In some ways this style owes something to grafitti, of which there was plenty out the back of the factory.

In this boarded up factory, I like the contrast between the crest over the window and the posted and torn bills.

London February 2011

I have decided to begin a blog on typography, recording the things I see around.
I am starting with a day in London on February 12th...
"Shape My Language" at the Design Museum, an installation created by the typeface and logo design agency, Dalton Maag and Canonical.
The separate translucent "cards" move around, catch the light and reveal figures behind as subtle shadows.

Outside Paolozzi's sculpture incorporates type into the form of the head.

Its good to see the lettering as part of the work of art, especially in a 3D context.

At Tate Modern I found Cevdet Erek's "Shading Monument for the Artist", where the letters cast a shadow down the wall, showing a political message about freedom fighters.

Not much colour in these images yet!
